"I have never overcome enjoying what I see. Therefore, in my painting and sculpting, I attempt to portray the literal: a visual world made up of patterns of abstract shapes, planes, and colors that stimulate our senses." - Al Sprague
American Panamanian Artist Al Sprague (1938) was born and raised in the Republic of Panama which greatly influences his work. After receiving his master's degree in Art from the American University in Washington, D.C., he returned home to paint the culture of Panama. His work depicting the everyday life of native fishermen, vendors, and dancers, has made Sprague one of the most recognized and beloved artists in Panama.
Sprague was one of the first artists to define the Panamanian culture through his art and is known for capturing the essence of Panama, its people. His most noted works are of the Panamanian women dancing in the traditional "pollera" and "montuna" costumes, the native fishermen trolling the seas of the Pacific Ocean, and the vendors selling their produce.
Over the years, Sprague has expanded his subject matter to include the Bahamas, American fishermen, and New Orleans.
His work has been on display in the White House, The Pentagon, the Panama Canal Administration Building, Reagan Presidential Library, The Carter Center, Department of Army, Chase Manhattan Bank, Bank of Korea, Bank of America, various Panama Embassies around the world including the Ambassador's Residence in Washington D.C., and several of the finest art galleries in the United States, Spain, Japan, the Bahamas, and Panama.
